Theatre Experiences and Goals

I have been singing ever since I was in preschool when we had "chorus" classes every week where we would learn about music and sing a new song every week. This love for singing was taken to the next level when I entered middle school and auditioned to be a part of my schools' production of 'Mary Poppins', and ever since 6th grade, I've participated in at least one musical each year at whatever school I was at. Other shows I was a part of in middle school include 'Into the Woods' and 'Beauty and the Beast'. In high school I have been a part of the musicals 'Les Mis' and 'Footloose'. In 'Footloose' I was cast as Wendy Jo, which was my first time having some form of a lead role, and it could not have been a more fun experience. I loved the shows plot, music, choreography, and the cast and crew, so 'Footloose' was definitely my favorite show that I've been involved in. 'Footloose' also helped me grow as an actress as I was challenged to step out of my comfort zone and experiment with how I wanted to portray Wendy Jo.

One thing that I love about theatre is being able to become someone else for two or three hours, and not think about what is going on outside of the theatre. I love being so in character and into the performance that I don't have to think about what I have to do when I get home, or which test I have to study for, or how bad my day was. Theatre is like an escape for me. I also love the comradery between the cast and crew and how close we all become. We all spend so much time together to put on such a great show and performance, and we all work super hard during rehearsals that we all become close friends with people we otherwise may not have had the chance to even meet or talk to. Plus, singing and acting is so much fun, and it's even more fun to do with your close friends. Aside from this, theatre does present its challenges sometimes. For example, it takes a lot of hours and a lot of hard work to put on the best show possible, so sometimes it can be tiring and hard to manage time between rehearsals and academics. I also think it's challenging to find the best way to portray a character. It takes a lot of experimentation, frustration, and patience until I can finally find the best way for me to portray a character and really understand what he/she might do in whatever scene is happening. For this reason, as an actress I would really like to work on character analysis and really being able to fully understand who I'm playing to create the best performance possible.

A few goals I have for myself this year would be to step out of my comfort zone and play some roles that I haven't really played before to see what roles I like the most and which ones I still need to work on. I would like to try to increase my comfort on stage, because the more comfortable I am, the better my performance will be. Lastly, I would like to experiment with delivery of lines so I can understand how the way I say things influences the actors around me and which form of line delivery works best for myself as well as the actors around me, and what is best for the scene as a whole.
