Prep For I Am My Own Wife

The show that we are going to be seeing on Thursday sounds really interesting. I really like how this show is focusing on pressing historical and societal issues. A lot of people have constructs about transgender people, so I think it’s actually important for people to come see the show to get a better grasp as to what their reality is really like. It’s also really interesting that Lothar’s transition to becoming Charlotte is occuring during World War II, and additionally, Lothar was raised by a Nazi. I think this factor is going to add another level of intensity and complexity to Charlotte’s story, that is going to draw the audience in and intrigue them.
This production of I Am My Own Wife is a one person show, with all about 30 characters being played by Mason Alexander Park. I’ve never seen a whole show be performed by one person before, so I’m going into this show with an open mind about this kind of concept and am excited to see how Mason Park adapts, interprets, and portrays each of the characters in this show. In the past, I haven’t watched many serious shows, I tend to like the more comedic and happy shows, so this show is going to be unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before. I’m hoping to be able to gain more insight regarding what the time period was like during World War II in Germany, but also about the life of people who are transgender. I admire how Doug Wright is bringing to light topics that many people don’t really talk about and stray away from, and confronting them with the audience; I think myself and the rest of the audience will be able to learn a lot from this performance.
